  • thank you, WeHo!

/  18 Sep 2012  /  News, On the road again

I had a fantastic time at On the Rox last week playing a full set and debuting my West Hollywood song, “Welcome Me Home.” My band Mike Chiaburu, Tim Young, and Jorge Balbi Castellano really rocked it out Sunset Strip-style. To top it off, I was presented with a brand new XTone acoustic from ESP Guitars. She’s got zebra-stripe wood and she’s lovely. :) Thank you to everyone who came out – I hope you had as much fun as I did!

That's me, arriving early for soundcheck like a real rock star.

It’s a little quiet on the live show front while I get the next round of things lined up! At the moment I’ve turned my attention to the Boss Loop Station Championship – I’ve submitted my video and am keeping fingers crossed for finalist selection this week. And I’ve got new videos and a new EP in the works, so STAY TUNED!

  • haviland’s show recap and video

     /  28 Apr 2009  /  News

I could never do justice to Haviland Stillwell’s show by merely describing it, but I will say that she was off the charts amazing, and the crowd was eating out of her hand. I had a fantastic time playing/singing back-up, and I must say, the crowd really seemed to dig “Manage,” the song I wrote for her to sing. I’ll post a video for that as soon as it becomes available, but first off, check out our version of “Crazy on You”:

Tim Young on electric, Aaron Sterling on drums, Mike Chiaburu on bass, and little ol’ me strumming my butt off. Hell yeah! Grrrrl power. :)

  • what i’ve been up to

     /  14 Mar 2009  /  News

I’ve been a very quiet blogger as of late (shame on me, I know), but I have not quiet musically, thank goodness. Here are just a couple things I’ve been up to:

Mike and I continue to work with Tim Young, uber-guitarist (not to mention uber-writer and producer) to demo songs for an upcoming album that we hope to record late Spring/early Summer. Without revealing too much, I can certainly say that I’m really excited about the direction that the album is taking! I’ve got a new show coming up at a great new venue, Cafe Muse, on April 10. I hope to unveil a few of these new songs then. The venue is so laid-back, and shows are always FREE – which should in itself be music to everyone’s recession-worn ears. I’ve been talking to the amazing Gaby Moreno about performing, and just to bring the lovely/talented lady quotient to crazy heights, Haviland Stillwell will likely also make an appearance…

…which brings me to the final new development in my musical life. I’ve written a song for Haviland that she’ll be performing (probably with me providing some guitar and/or backup vocals) on April 23 at the Upright Cabaret. It’s been a really great challenge to bring her experiences to life and write a song that she can really make her own. I can’t wait to hear Ms. Stillwell herself perform it! Her concert is shaping up to be an amazingly fun, eclectic evening, and I can’t wait for it, myself. Stay tuned…

  • so this is christmas…

     /  27 Dec 2008  /  News

I had a lot of lovely musical pre-Christmas gifts this year. First off, I received a lovely writeup in the feature “This Woman’s Work” on the great female-centric (woohoo!) music blog Womenfolk. Thanks to Robbie McCown, the mastermind behind the blog. (And I owe her even more thanks, because it seems like the post has generated some more bloggy interest out there on the internet!) The post, linked to here, actually went up a couple weeks ago, right before I had another warm fuzzy pre-Christmas gift in the form of my holiday show at Hotel Cafe! The band, including Tim Young, Branden Harper, Mike Chiaburu and Haviland Stillwell, really gelled. We had a fabulous time and a great audience who were really troopers to make it out in the monsoon-like weather. Reportedly, they had a great time, too!

  • Tuesday, 4/29 – Burlington, VT
In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that this was a weird one. Burlington is an adorable city and things are beautiful this time of year (though cold. There were snow flurries while we were there, whoa!). And the venue was cute. But we had to do our own sound for the first time on the trip, which basically means Mike did it, and it was no big deal but I always feel bad when he has to worry about the PA and his own bass playing at the same time. The crowd was very reserved, very quiet, which made me wonder if they were digging it at all, and I kind of assumed they weren’t that into it. But when I played my last song, people were like, ‘no, play some more…’ Go figure. So I guess they liked it well enough after all… Read the rest of this entry »

  • Last night was the big Jeff Buckley tribute at The Key Club, hosted by Jack Osbourne and put together by Acoustic Playhouse. I had never played The Key Club and God knows if I ever will get the chance again – but the place was packed last night with people listening intently to all the songs. Especially after Jeff’s mother, Mary Guibert, gave a short, emotional introduction there was an incredible energy in the room. Everybody did a great job with their renditions of the songs, and when it finally came time for us to perform I found myself a bit more jittery than I usually am for whatever reason. I didn’t play guitar, which made me realize how much I generally hide behind my guitar – I felt very exposed not to have it, and kind of like, ‘what do I do with my hands?’ But Tim Young, my guitarist, sounded fantastic, I had a great time singing, and I’m happy to say the crowd seemed into it. Jack Osbourne was very complimentary – he’s actually quite polite and humble, and it was nice to meet him quite briefly.

It was a long night and a lot of nervous energy expended over the hours waiting to play – I feel like I’m too exhausted to come up with anything clever to say about it. I think Mike and I are going to Largo tonight – hey it’s been a few weeks – and hopefully Grant-Lee Phillips’ lovely voice will rejuvenate me. :) I think there will be some kind of video released; I’m not sure how publicly, but if it’s made available I will certainly be letting all of you know…

  • I keep saying I’m going to get better about regularly blogging and then I don’t – or I do, but in fits and starts.  In my defense, we have been BUSY planning and promoting the CD release party. Mike and I are the street team, the publicists, the promoters, etc. :)  More on that in the next blog. First I’ll catch you up on my recent musical activities:

    1. Guitar lessons. I’m taking lessons from Tim Young when I can squeeze them in. He’s teaching me how to improvise and solo more. Lots of blues and pentatonic scales and other scales in different places on the guitar. I’m playing electric, which is really fun (and easier on my fingers, frankly). Who knew I could bend notes? I’m trying to get out of my ruts and expand my skills and songwriting – and ultimately, be a girl who can wail on the guitar. There are definitely some but far too few out there. Hopefully I’ll be shredding in no time…

    2. Our show at Cafe Cordiale on the 23rd. Lots of fun, friendly people, and we made some new fans! One of them even pre-ordered a CD. One of my favorite parts might have been when this woman actually leapt up from her dinner to applaud me after I sang “Careful.” But she also full-out danced in her seat when we played “Comfort,” so that was a close second.  Perhaps I’ll be a dance-pop star yet…ha ha ha

    3. Rehearsing for the show on the 6th – and more on that in the next blog, as I said. But playing with Tim, Mike, and Aaron this last week was so fantastic. I’m always suprised by how gratifying it is to hear what other people do with my songs – they always become something different and better than I can even imagine.

    4. Hearing Aimee Mann at Largo again – along with Paul Bryan, her bassist and, these days, producer. You should check him out on MySpace and go listen to his song “Houdini and Celia” and cry like I do. :) Jay Bellerose and Jen Condos played with him – it was the first time I’d seen Jen play, and it’s very inspiring (see my above comment about girls and guitars…). She’s the sweetest, as is Jay. And we even saw Ryan Freeland, our album engineer/mixer, too. It was a fun reunion and I got a little emotional, especially watching Jay play with Aimee Mann. I still sort of can’t believe that he’s on MY album. I am a very lucky girl. :)

  • CD RELEASE SHOW JUNE 6!

     /  03 Jun 2007  /  News

It’s this Wednesday 6/6 at The Derby in Los Feliz, and you should come (if you live here). Added to Mike’s usual beautiful bass lines, we’ve got Aaron Sterling on drums – killer. Really amazing. Tim Young’s guitar stylings give my songs the coolest quality, I swear, almost psychedelic! My friend and breathtakingly aweseome cellist Alisa Horn should be joining us for some songs, too. They all rule and I feel very lucky. And that’s really like 4 reasons to come right there, actually. :)

The other folks playing include Alexandra Georgiadis (great voice. We were in Evita together in college – funny eh? Oh the bonds of musical theater), Gaby Moreno, who’s a John Lennon songwriting contest winner, The Youngs, who to me are like the epitome of cool, and The Procession, who have a quirky power-pop sound and have just toured the UK. So there’s 4 more. We’re in the VIP Lounge of The Derby, which is quite cool; it’s very open a big room but still feels intimate, and there’s a bar back there and food served by Louise’s.

In other words, it’s a party, and you should come with all your friends. Just write me to get a discounted cover. OOOh I can’t wait!

  • Here’s what I liked about Valentine’s Day in LA – it was not a big deal. And because I had few to no expectations, it wildly exceeded all of them.

No one at work asked me what Mike was ‘getting me’ for Valentine’s Day, and inquiries about plans we had were very casual. Most people in my small office are paired off, but there was no delivery of flowers or obnoxious teddy bears or anything. Cookies and other things I should not eat abounded – I don’t actually know who brought them in, but there was an abundance of pink sprinkles and frosting which literally sustained me throughout the day…

Mike is, or has been, sort of anti-Valentine’s Day, so imagine my surprise when I got home to receive a bouquet of roses! Aww. I guess it’s just inescapably part of being a girl, but being given flowers just pleases me to no end. The fact that it was a total surprise really does make it that mch better. YAY!

Being no slouch, I took Mike out to Largo for Dave Palmer’s special Valentine’s Day show. In return, he’s taking me to Aimee Mann’s show on Friday there. The show tonight was fantastic as usual. The band included Aaron Sterling on drums, Dave on piano, of course, David Piltch on bass, Tim Young on guitar…with David Garza and Fiona Apple.

When Fiona wasn’t singing, much of the time, she was sitting about 10 inches away from me. I just don’t even know what to do with myself when someone I idolize that much is sitting right next to me…so I do nothing. Other people were talking to her after the show, taking photos with their camera phones, and I just couldn’t think of anything to say because nothing would sum up what I actually want to say.

Oh, Largo is my favorite place ever. So is LA, really. Today was a good day to be right where I am. ‘night everyone…hope you had a good Valentine’s Day, too, however you chose to celebrate (or not celebrate!) it.
