  • haviland’s show recap and video

     /  28 Apr 2009  /  News

I could never do justice to Haviland Stillwell’s show by merely describing it, but I will say that she was off the charts amazing, and the crowd was eating out of her hand. I had a fantastic time playing/singing back-up, and I must say, the crowd really seemed to dig “Manage,” the song I wrote for her to sing. I’ll post a video for that as soon as it becomes available, but first off, check out our version of “Crazy on You”:

Tim Young on electric, Aaron Sterling on drums, Mike Chiaburu on bass, and little ol’ me strumming my butt off. Hell yeah! Grrrrl power. :)

  • On the prowl…and ReverbNation

     /  15 Apr 2009  /  News

So, housekeeping first: I’m in the process of moving my mailing list over to ReverbNation. If you’d like to sign up, just click here.

Second, I’m in a little section of the most recent episode of the AfterEllen.com show, “Cat on the Prowl.” The show features Haviland Stillwell, and I’m currently working with her a lot (this is easy, because we are kind of like new west coast bffs). For one thing, I wrote a song that she’ll be performing at her show on April 23 at the Upright Cabaret . So we gave a little preview of the song – I show up midway through the episode, then again at the end, but you should REALLY make sure that you see the part where Haviland plays basketball in heels. Priceless. Check it out here.

  • Last night’s show at Cafe Muse was so much fun, and PACKED! A seriously standing-room only situation, which was great. Peter Adams, The Youngs/Tim Young and Haviland Stillwell all sounded great, and Mike and I had a blast. The new songs were really, really well-received (yay)!

My friend Lacey (shall I call her @LaceyH?) did the whole “live Tweet” thing from the show, and you can see a photo here. And if you want to follow me on Twitter – please do! http://twitter.com/kristyhanson I mostly keep my updates musical, but every now and again I will tell you what I had for breakfast, you know, just because.

I personally celebrate Easter next weekend, but for many of you, I know that this week is Passover/Easter week and weekend, so I hope that you are all having lovely holiday celebrations.

  • show at Cafe Muse tonight

     /  10 Apr 2009  /  News

The show tonight at Cafe Muse is going to be killer – Peter Adams starts off, will join us for a few songs, Haviland Stillwell sings a song I wrote for her, Tim and Eryn Young join Mike and me for an Emmylou Harris cover, and then The Youngs rock it out to finish. Whew! I don’t know what your idea of fun is…but tonight is mine… :) Info about the show is here.

The other day, when we were finished rehearsing at Tim Young’s and Eryn Young and John Schuller were headed into the studio to rehearse, Tim laughed at the way we had accidentally coordinated our black shirts, and took this “band photo” of us. Sadly, Mitchell the dog will not be appearing tonight. But he will be there in spirit.

  • what i’ve been up to

     /  14 Mar 2009  /  News

I’ve been a very quiet blogger as of late (shame on me, I know), but I have not quiet musically, thank goodness. Here are just a couple things I’ve been up to:

Mike and I continue to work with Tim Young, uber-guitarist (not to mention uber-writer and producer) to demo songs for an upcoming album that we hope to record late Spring/early Summer. Without revealing too much, I can certainly say that I’m really excited about the direction that the album is taking! I’ve got a new show coming up at a great new venue, Cafe Muse, on April 10. I hope to unveil a few of these new songs then. The venue is so laid-back, and shows are always FREE – which should in itself be music to everyone’s recession-worn ears. I’ve been talking to the amazing Gaby Moreno about performing, and just to bring the lovely/talented lady quotient to crazy heights, Haviland Stillwell will likely also make an appearance…

…which brings me to the final new development in my musical life. I’ve written a song for Haviland that she’ll be performing (probably with me providing some guitar and/or backup vocals) on April 23 at the Upright Cabaret. It’s been a really great challenge to bring her experiences to life and write a song that she can really make her own. I can’t wait to hear Ms. Stillwell herself perform it! Her concert is shaping up to be an amazingly fun, eclectic evening, and I can’t wait for it, myself. Stay tuned…

  • so this is christmas…

     /  27 Dec 2008  /  News

I had a lot of lovely musical pre-Christmas gifts this year. First off, I received a lovely writeup in the feature “This Woman’s Work” on the great female-centric (woohoo!) music blog Womenfolk. Thanks to Robbie McCown, the mastermind behind the blog. (And I owe her even more thanks, because it seems like the post has generated some more bloggy interest out there on the internet!) The post, linked to here, actually went up a couple weeks ago, right before I had another warm fuzzy pre-Christmas gift in the form of my holiday show at Hotel Cafe! The band, including Tim Young, Branden Harper, Mike Chiaburu and Haviland Stillwell, really gelled. We had a fabulous time and a great audience who were really troopers to make it out in the monsoon-like weather. Reportedly, they had a great time, too!

  • I have been busy busy lately, in part because I moved – just downstairs in the same building, but a move is a move. And you have to pack boxes even if you’re going to unpack them after carrying them 100 feet. To be honest, the boxes aren’t unpacked yet, but I’m still moving forward with plans for the Hotel Cafe show on December 15. I’ve been picking out some favorite holiday songs and working on an original holiday song. Also, my oh-so-lovely and talented friend Haviland Stillwell will be making a special appearance at the show, so we’ve been getting together to get ready. It’s been so long since I’ve sung with someone else like that, and I really can’t wait! I dropped by the Hotel Cafe today, and they were putting up a giant Christmas tree that I think will get everyone in the proper spirit. More news to come, and I sure hope to see you there!
