Biography
Kristy Hanson is a singer-songwriter with a sound "that would send most modern pop divas out looking for voice lessons" (Recoil Magazine). Kristy studied classical voice in college, but inspired by songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Patty Griffin, and Aimee Mann, she turned from opera to blaze her own musical path.
Recently settled in Los Angeles, she has performed at famed local venues Tangier, The Knitting Factory, and The Derby. Her live show recently garnered praise from respected Music Connection magazine: "Hanson truly shines....there's no doubt [she] can write and sing with the best of them." She's performed at Chicago's Uncommon Ground, the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, and toured college towns on the East Coast and across the Midwest. She was featured in showcases at both the Midwest Music Summit and the Rockrgrl Conference in Seattle. She has been featured on several radio shows, including best-selling author Mitch Albom's nationally syndicated show out of Detroit and XMU's Radar Report.
Kristy recently released her third independent album and most ambitious effort to date, Already Gone on her own label, Relay Records. The well-crafted album ranges from quirky grooves to heartbreaking ballads, held together by Kristy's captivating, "angelic voice" (PopMatters.com). Recently, the album was featured on XM Satellite Radio's Radar Report, and host Josiah Lambert called it "a delightful CD."
Produced by Kristy and her longtime partner/bassist Mike Chiaburu and recorded in Los Angeles by engineer Ryan Freeland (Aimee Mann, Joe Henry), Already Gone features the formidable talents of drummer Jay Bellerose and keyboardist Patrick Warren, who have performed with the likes of Madeleine Peyroux, Fiona Apple, and Ani DiFranco. The album was engineered by Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen (O Brother Where Art Thou?). Kristy, Mike and Jay recorded most of Already Gone together over the course of just five days, and the resulting album retains the immediate feel of a live performance. On much of the album, the three-piece band arrangements let Kristy's vocals shine through, while Patrick Warren's inspired keyboard work—on instruments ranging from Chamberlain to glockenspiel—adds unexpected, orchestral flourishes to the album's organic sound.
