Oh, so first off, I forgot to mention, in my last blog, Matt Jones – he performed after us at Rockwood and completely rocked it with his band. He’s very soulful and is a very nice guy to boot, so check out his music.
There were actually a few people photographing the show yesterday, which was pretty funny – with all the clicking at the beginning in particular, I felt that it was a high-profile media event rather than our lil’ show…
I’ll share all of them eventually, but for now, a few courtesy of Adam Jason Photography:

Love this one!

I’ll keep this brief, because it’s getting to feel like bedtime and we’re off to Boston tomorrow – but we played tonight in Danville, PA at Brews ‘N Bytes – a little restaurant and music venue run by Jason Perez. It’s a family affair, from the cooking (which his wife does) to running the sound. I think Jason even cleared our plates at some point on his way back to the soundboard. It cracked me up how he was just everywhere all the time! Jason was good enough not only to have us play at his venue but feed us and give us shelter for the night – and there’s even TV here! We watched some of Harry Potter and now we’re watching The Soup, so it pretty much feels like a weekend night at home. :) Read the rest of this entry »

Revision to this blog – the radio show we did this morning wasn’t live – so you still have a chance to catch it! See below:
Check out the nice story on the Progressive Women’s Alliance fundraiser on YouTube by clicking here. You’ll hear a little of Lux Land and yours truly…I like that they cut it so I say “I know what to say and I’m not afraid to say it.” Very appropriate and makes me sound way more confident. It’s way overdue at this point, but I did want to write and say how awesome our Cleveland tour stop was! Personally for me it was really lovely because I was hanging out with some of my favorite people – my family and then such good friends with my family it starts to all feel like family! It’s odd – I lived in Cleveland ’til I was about 5, and then my family moved down to Miami. We visited Cleveland a lot in the summers, especially in the beginning before those summers got too full up with my tennis tournaments and summer camp and who knows what else. But it’s really been a while since I’ve spent significant time there, and it totally still feels like home. I was getting all nostalgic over the tree-lined streets of Shaker Heights. Today is Shakespeare’s birthday, and in his honor I’ve composed a sonnet AND written a stunning play about treachery, love, and many other timeless themes…
Ha, just kidding. I just realized that today’s the day, but I couldn’t have been less creative or productive today. Mike and I drove all day and then got into New Jersey, where we’re staying, on Monday night somewhat late. His aunt fed us well and then we got up the next morning and met a friend in the city, in the area she describes as ‘north Gramercy’ (she could call it anything, what do I know?). It was a lovely day, a lovely lunch, a lovely time just catching up. It was such a spring-y day, and we went through enough wintry weather on our way out here that I felt I could enjoy it along with the New Yorkers, even though we should be used to sun. This friend enjoys what I enjoy – walking and talking, eating, drinking a coffee – nice, laid-back fun. Read the rest of this entry »

As promised, here’s a little photo-retrospective from the Grand Rapids show we played – the Progressive Women’s Alliance Fundraiser on April 16.
All photos by the clearly very talented David McGowan!
Thanks again to the event organizer Kristin Salerno for having us there, doing such a fab job promoting the event…and sending us these pics. Speaking of Kristin, here she is:

Last night we played at the Rumba Cafe in Columbus, OH, which was a ton of fun. It was more or less the first day of spring here and people were out at the bars in full force. In particular, they were at Rumba Cafe for Spikedriver, a sort of rockin’ jam band that apparently is the top drawing band in Columbus. They were the happy hour band, and uh…yep, they were doing their job, because people were happy. We, in fact, couldn’t even really physically get into the club, let alone load our stuff in. A walk through once was enough to put me right back onto the sidewalk; people were dancing, spilling beer, all around just having a great time. From what I heard through the window that band sounded great… :) Read the rest of this entry »

You know that kind of tired you are when you feel wide awake but in a daze, like your brain has ceased to function properly but your body’s not listening to it? Maybe it’s just me…
Anyway, I had lots of enthusiasm about blogging, but now that I’m actually doing it I find I have no idea what to say. Performing does kind of take it out of you. But I can say that tonight was the Progressive Women’s Alliance fundraiser. It was held at one of my favorite Grand Rapids restaurants, so the tapas was good, the wine was flowing, and the music was great. Claudia Schmidt followed by Rachael Davis followed by Lux Land – all were incredible in their own right (and between them kicked ass on many different instruments. YEAH to women who can really PLAY their guitars! I’m still working on it. I’ll rip a solo one of these days). It was quite humbling to be a part of it, and inspiring to be sharing the stage with women who are really doing what I want to do – that is, making a living making music, their own music, their way. So tomorrow I’ll be on my fave station, WYCE, here in Grand Rapids, playing a couple songs and chatting up with PWA event tomorrow night with Kristin Salerno, the event hostess with the mostest…putting it mildly. This girl has been working like crazy on the fundraiser and I know it’s going to be a fabulous success. But we’re still going to get on the radio and try to get even more of you to come… :) It’s 88.1 FM if you want to tune in at noon eastern time, or just go to www.wyce.org. I got that blog title in my head and just had to go with it, even though we’ve now emerged (amazingly unscathed) from the wild, wild west and find ourselves now ‘at home’ in Michigan with Mike’s family. We’ve only played one show, but the travels to get there were pretty darn interesting/scary/wonderful. For example: seeing snowcapped mountains in Wyoming? Awe-inspiring. Driving through that same snow and ice a few hours later? Terrifying.
I thought I’d do a little week in review to catch you up, and then I’ll get on the daily-or-so blog wagon. Read the rest of this entry »
